From the course: Career Advice from Some of the Biggest Names in Business

Marc Lore on going all in

- People who look at your career and they say ya know I want to be Marc. This is the dream, create these companies, sell, transform huge enterprises. What kind of advice do you give someone who's let's say, just getting out of college? - You got to be willing to take some risk and be tenacious and go all in. I would say that's probably the best advice. You don't, there's no such thing as like goin half in or I'm going to kina work on this and see what happens. I mean you havta just go all in. And the first company that I did before Diapers.com was a startup and I had made a decent amount of money in banking and had one investor say, hey I see on the cap table here Marc, you invested 390,000. Why didn't you just put 400,000 in? I said because I only have 390,000. That's kina my point on goin all in. It's like the investor saw that I basically had my entire life savings in this business and they said that's enough for me. You obviously are prepared to go all the way to the mat for this one. Sometimes you see people and they kina hedge a little bit too much and when you hedge, there's just an easy escape route. A lot of people just take it and ya got to set yourself up a situation where it's like there's the cliff and you basically step on the pedal, and you just go. You're all in, right? There's no stopping. You going to either go across, - Just don't go lose it. - Yeah, you're either going to go across or you're done. So you have to be prepared to do that. I'd also say in terms of getting started, I come across a lot of people and they're always like, I got this great idea and I'm not sure how, ya know, and they say, what should I do? I always give everyone the same advice. I say, do you have a vision for what you want this to be? And they always have it and they have the passion for it. I said you just have ta get started. Just have ta get started. Literally, I, what's the biggest impact you could make tomorrow on helping you get clo, one step closer to that vision? And it really narrows your thinking and they say the biggest impact they can make tomorrow, well, I would do this. OK, then do that. And then the next day, same thing. And once you start stringing together a few of these and you have some momentum, suddenly you start building confidence and the next thing you know, you're in it, right? And then you add in the all in piece and that's it. You're off to the races.
