- Do you want to hear the most surprising ethical challenge I've had as a manager? It's managing performance and compensation. Now, you think that would be rather procedural. You've got your pay grades, you give someone some sort of a set of performance objectives. You measure 'em against that performance objectives and then you move on, it might take time. But an ethical challenge? Here's what happens in reality, particularly in larger corporations. So when you look at an aggregate, the company does better, as a general rule, you might have more people that creep up to higher performance ratings if the company doesn't do as well, that it drops. That all makes sense, but in an individual level, it can get really complicated. I had eight people that did maybe just what they were supposed to do, maybe a little less. I got some struggles here.
