Managing cooperation and competition
- Ecosystems have many players in them, and so it gets complicated to manage the competition and the cooperation that's inevitably going to take place inside the ecosystem. How you do that, there are three tips. The first is to always follow good management principles, good partnership management principles. So for example, clear goals, well crafted contracts, good relationship management, good communication, a certain amount of trust, all of that is important for any partnership and it's super important for any ecosystem. The second tip is how exclusive are the relationships in your group? For example, IBM when it created the IBM PC grouping didn't want to rely just on Intel to provide it's chips even though that was a technology standard it chose. So it asked Intel to license the technology standard to several other players so that they didn't have to rely just exclusively on Intel. The third tip is to think about how open or how closed your ecosystem is going to be. For example…
