Make it clear why it matters

(rock music) - One of the most consistent things you're going to hear from adult learners is that they have to understand why the training matters to them. They have to know what the end game looks like before they ever start. It's one of the hardest things for corporate training to overcome because most corporate training is designed to impact the business. It's about processes that are meant to be business-oriented processes and we call that Top-Down Messaging. It's from the business' perspective. (bouncy music) - I have no idea why we would do it that way. It takes twice as long. Why don't we just do it the other way? - (sighs) I'm not even in the admin department. Why am I even here? - This is a microsoft stapler. - (man voiceover) Oh man, is it Tuesday? Taco Tuesday. - In order to truly impact an adult learner, we have to learn how to change that to become Bottom-Up Messaging. It shouldn't start with what they should do, it should start with what they get. (upbeat music) - Ah, if I do it this way, it will cut down on the amount of hours I have to log on the back end. Nice. - Oh, the report format applies to our reports too? Oh, that's cool. - Get it open sight. - (man voiceover) Tacos. - So as your beginning to develop the learning strategies and the content, think about the way that you're starting off that content. Are you starting it off from the business' perspective? That top down messaging. Or are you starting it off with what that adult learner gets. Until you provide that aspect, until you answer the question, why am I learning this, they are going to hold onto that in their minds. You want to be able to release that so they can begin to understand what it is that you are trying to accomplish in the context of the training and what they get out of it.
