- One of the most important lessons I learned from my mom is the power of listening. You learn a lot more from listening than from talking. And listen, listen, listen. And listening is at the heart of understanding and empathy. And so I think it was drilled in me as a child from my mother to be a great listener, and I think it has carried me through my current job now as a reporter and as a journalist. And I don't know how you couldn't have empathy when you spend the time in the field that I've spent, whether it's a victim in a tornado, a hurricane. I mean, we went to Hurricane Harvey, and we reported from Houston for about a week. Houston flooded. There are parts of Houston where people's homes were completely wiped out. They put thousands of people in a convention center to sleep on the floor in cots, in Houston, one of the wealthiest cities in America.
