From the course: Guy Kawasaki on How to Rock Social Media

LinkedIn tips

- The next topic is LinkedIn. LinkedIn occupies a very special place in social media because I think it is the most serious use of social media. The reason is that when you're on LinkedIn, you're trying to basically find a job or find business development or make a sale or something so this means that you're not trolling, you're not showing that you're drunk, you're not showing stupid pictures of yourself doing stupid things, it's the highest quality. So it has the highest content standards and you need to grok that, you need to understand that when you're on LinkedIn, you need to be the most serious of all. Couple of tips for you, first of all, integrate SlideShare. So if you're doing a presentation, PowerPoint or KeyNote, put it on SlideShare and then integrate your SlideShare into your LinkedIn account. It leads to a lot of people. Some people find you from LinkedIn, some people find you from SlideShare, so two plus two often equals five if you integrate SlideShare. Another thing, getting back a little more basic is when you request someone to connect with you, there's obviously the default short little text and I'll tell you, you should spend 30 seconds and customize that to explain exactly why you want to make a connection and who you are. Lots of people get lots of requests and I know what I do is I ignore most of them especially if they're the standard default one that I know someone didn't even care enough to personalize the connection request. Next tip is be sure on LinkedIn that you're trying to focus, that you want to position yourself for your expertise, for your competence, not that you're a cool, friendly guy but that you are an expert or a thought leader or at least, at least competent in something specific, marketing, sales, engineering, PHP, you know, Python, whatever it is, focus on a niche. And the last tip for LinkedIn is be sure to participate in groups. Groups like I have a group that I follow about self publishing. Again, because of the very nature of LinkedIn, people are more serious there, less of the trolling, less of the battles, participate in groups, it's a great way to meet more people, it's a great way to establish yourself, participate in groups. LinkedIn for you.
