- If you find yourself negotiating and you're in the interview process with other companies, how can you time things right and leverage one offer to improve another? First, buy yourself as much time as you can with the first offer. You might say, "As you can imagine, this is a big decision "and there are lots of factors to consider. "Can I have two weeks to get back to you?" Second, alert the others who you're interviewing with that you've received a formal offer by saying, "I'm a big believer in being as transparent as possible "so I wanted to let you know "I did receive a competitive offer today. "I felt like our initial interview went really well, "and I'm extremely interested "in pursuing a position with you. "Do you have a timeline for when you'll be making a decision "on who you'd like to move forward with?" The goal here is to hurry another offer.
