Let clients have good ideas

- When it comes to consulting work, I like to say I've never had a single good idea. All the good ideas have been my clients'. While I may have generated the idea, I like to have my clients come up with it through me asking the right questions. When it's their idea, there's a higher likelihood it'll be implemented because they feel ownership for it. A consultant's job is client impact. If that means giving clients credit for good ideas that get implemented, then that's what matters. You may have concerns about taking this approach because there may be a perception that you're not adding value. There are a few ways to overcome that issue. Be hypothesis driven. Have a perspective on what you think the answer is. Think through questions you could ask to get the client to arrive at that answer. Share initial hypotheses with key client stakeholders.
