- When an employee doesn't meet a performance standard the organization has set, we often assume they need training, but sometimes, they need more. Training addresses skill gaps, whereas development is focused on building capabilities. Development may include training, but it also includes other experiences. Like job shadowing, networking, or formal mentorship programs. Companies with a culture of learning understand that development is necessary to build organizational capabilities in alignment with the companies strategic goals. These are the companies that can adapt to changes quickly. There are five disciplines that interface with each other in order to create a learning culture. Systems thinking, shared vision, mental models, team learning and personal mastery. I've included an exercise file that provides explanations of each. Adults are independent, self directed learners, who need to know how training can make them effective in their work, for them to value the training…
