Leading with courage

- In our research, we have been able to validate when leaders lead with courage, employees actually have a better sense of their baseline, so they know they're welcome, they can come and show up more authentically, and they can speak their truth. As a result, organizations experience better psychological safety. Again, we also found the opposite to be true. Where leaders are not leading with courage and employees feel like they're not necessarily welcome to live their truth, there is a greater sense of insecurity. So what is courage? Courage is that willingness to be vulnerable against uncertainty, risk, and emotional exposure. A lot of us think of courage as absence of fear, but it's actually fear and walking, so there's an emotion there and there's an action because a value, any value, really, without an action becomes more of an aspiration rather than a way of being.
