- In your workplace, you may hear the words leader and manager used interchangeably. But there is a difference. Managers stay in the present, monitoring today's tasks; while leaders look forward, imagining the possibilities. Now, some people believe that leaders are born, not made. Others, like myself, believe that leadership can be taught. These different opinions have generated many theories, the first of which is trait theory. An example of trait theory is the great man theory of leadership, which states that certain people are born with innate characteristics that make them leaders. Julius Caesar and Alexander the Great both embody this great man theory.
