Lead with intent when negotiating

- So now it's time to deliver your counteroffer. An offer has been made, you've scheduled a live conversation to discuss it with the hiring manager, and you've taken time to consider all your negotiation priorities. So now, what exactly do you say? I've pulled together a script for your reference in the Exercise Files with step by step talking points and it all starts with opening with positive intent. Negotiation, after all, is all about coming to a mutual agreement. So here's how you might want to open. "Thanks for taking time to discuss this offer. "I'm confident we can find a way forward "that works well for everyone." Or you might say, "I'm excited at the prospect "of joining your team and want to ensure "we're set up for success over the long term." Or, "I'm looking forward to ironing out these final details "so we can get to work, since I'm confident "we'll be able to do great things together." Now, delivering a counteroffer is a very assertive move, which can come with some social penalties and make you seem less likable. This is especially true for women in a world where unconscious bias means assertive women are seen as less likable. But the research shows we can all benefit by opening with positive intent before getting to our very assertive content. By opening with intent, you're positioning yourself as members of the same team, not on opposite sides of the negotiation table.
