- In America, they're called layoffs. And in much of the world, they're called redundancies. But no matter what word you use it likely has a lot more to do with the company than with the workers being laid off. In other words, it's them, not you, and knowing where layoffs are, or could be coming, will help you in a job search to understand where opportunities will be and where you might just be wasting your time. Layoffs occur when companies fire their people. Sometimes it occurs in small groups and sometimes it's a lot of people, but if you're in an active job search, you want to be watching for layoff announcements to be one step ahead of the curve. Layoffs data at the biggest companies often shows up in the press, but there's also a data series for this that shows up in the Challenger Layoffs Data Report.
