- Here's a tough question, How do you know when to stop giving more chances, advice, and reprimands and actually decide to let an employee go? The truth is it's not a perfect science. But if you're paying attention and know what to look for, you can make the right call. Let's start with extreme behaviors as an obvious case. For example, any kind of violence, sexual infractions or drug and alcohol use at work. These may provide grounds for immediate dismissal. Your first call is for security if it's needed, then HR. Someone in those groups will make the decision about including anyone else. For example, the police. Of course most employee performance or behavior problems are not extreme. Which actually make your job more difficult. You have to be vigilant in making observations and documenting behavior. Typically a diligent effort will correct the performance issue.
