- Consensus decision-making could warrant a full course itself, but we can't talk about making key decisions as managers without considering it as one of the viable decision-making strategies. First, a definition. Merriam-Webster defines consensus as "a general agreement of group solidarity in sentiment and belief." Synonyms include unanimity, agreement, and accord. Well, that sounds great. But in real life, that is hard to achieve. While there are a variety of factors that can impact the difficulty and time required to achieve it, the size of the group is the first factor. The bigger the group, the harder it is, and the longer it will take to reach. Here are a few other things to think about when you're attempting to gain consensus. Consensus isn't a majority vote. If you truly want consensus, tell people that is the goal. Which means as the manager, you're losing your positional power to make the final decision.…
