- One of the key concepts to managing up, is to learn how to operate from our sphere of control. The things that we have direct power over. So instead of pointing fingers at what other people should do or what other people need to do, let's focus directly on what we can do. A couple of key concepts will really help you be really great at managing up. Number one, as much as we wish it were true we can not control other people. We only have power over how we behave. Our actions, our reactions, our interactions. Two, we kind of resist changing. And secretly I believe that people wish that others would adapt to them. So we have to understand that our power in relationships comes from our ability to adapt. How much are we willing to adapt to other people so we bring them towards us. Adapting is simple.
