- Humility has been described as the willingness to truly learn. Consider that you may have things to learn about your new job or company or industry, and embrace the opportunity. Smart as you may be, or think you may be, you really may not know better. Have respect for the culture you're joining and the people who have been part of it, many of them for years. Be humble. Because you may be coming from outside the company or department, you offer a fresh perspective and new ideas. Presumably, that's part of the reason you were hired. But first, learn how things work around there. Wait before you begin to offer your brilliant ideas, and get permission to do so beforehand. Be invited to share your thoughts. My first tip is to understand the environment you're joining. This is called beginner's mind. It means being open and eager, and not having preconceptions when you learn something new.
