- One area where data ownership comes up a lot is with the growing use of connected devices. We often call this the Internet of Things or IoT. So let's imagine that you work for a medical device manufacturer. Your company sells a device that helps people with sleep apnea breathe when they're sleeping. These devices are commonly called continuous positive airway pressure or CPAP machines. You might know one who has one of these machines. They sleep with a small mask over their face. Your company's CPAP machine connects up through a home wifi network. That way you can update the software or even know when the equipment is misbehaving.
