- I once worked the software development team manager from a large tech company. Their entire backend team were really quiet, heads down thinkers. They were your stereotypical computer programmers. The manager I was working with, knew coding but was not a programmer by training and had a much more motivator type style. When he started he put in place several recognition programs to try to increase employee engagement. Once a week, he would bring one member of his team up and stand them up on a desk and say what he thought he or she had done well. And at the monthly all hands meeting he would ask one of them to stand up and say a few words to the rest of the company about what they were doing.
