- Who do you feel close to? Your family? Your friends? At work, do you feel closer to the people in your own department more than those from another department? In many of the global projects I've participated in, people from different parts of the world don't feel close to each other. They feel unaffiliated, which translates into reduced collaboration and poor communication. Forging a strong personal connection is the cornerstone for achieving excellent collaboration. But face-to-face meetings are not always possible, so how can we create connection when people are not face-to-face? First, include time in your project plan for people to socialize virtually. For example, at the start of your video conference, allocate a percentage of the meeting time for people to talk about some personal anecdotes, or stories from a recent sport event, or a trip to an interesting place.
