- One of the first people I promoted into management and trained to be a good leader had a heck of a time getting people to follow up on their discussions. She came to me saying, "I would have discussions with people, "I would tell them what I wanted them to do, "and it just seems like they never do what they say "they're going to." Well in working with her, it turned out that people didn't feel listened to, they didn't feel engaged, and research shows that when people feel listened to, when they feel like they have a voice, they're more likely to commit going forward, and that was her challenge. This manifests in a variety of ways. Students who feel like their professors listen are more likely to do better on tests and in class, regardless of other aspects of the professor.
