- Have you ever crossed the street or walked in a different direction because you noticed someone walking towards you who immediately made you feel uncomfortable, but once you passed by them, that feeling went away and you questioned yourself about your reaction? You maybe even felt silly for going out of your way to avoid them. Well, that's an example of your implicit bias rising to the surface, resulting in you making the decision to cross the street or change directions. Implicit bias is demonstrated when we have negative attitudes towards people or let stereotypes affect our decision-making in an unconscious way. This can be influenced by our personal relationships, social settings, past experiences or the mass media. They strengthen over time and affect our understanding, opinions and actions.
