- Bosses come in many flavors and types. Identifying what kind of boss you have requires paying attention to how they operate in the workplace. Taking the time to fully understand who they are, and what makes them tick, is the first step to really learning how to manage up. I'm going to show you six key areas for you to explore as you put together the puzzle that is your boss. Area number one: communication style, communication preferences, how do they like to communicate? Introvert, extrovert, long-winded, short-winded, written, or oral? Pay attention, communication matters. Number two: their work style. And this is a really big bucket, but a couple things to look at are are they collaborative, meaning they want to work with you, or are they more independent, meaning they just want you to do the work? Do they tend to be more quick decision makers, or more slow and methodical? So take a good look at their work style.…
