How you can excel with relationship capital

- As Richard Branson says, "succeeding in business is all about making connections." And he's right. Essentially, success in business is about making friends and and then working with those friends to elevate each other, building relationship capital with as many people as you can. So what is relationship capital? It's essentially the level of connection we have with others. Put simply, it's a measure of how good your relationship is, either personally or professionally, with someone else. If the relationship you're building has no real value, then the relationship is worthless. Value in this context is built by exchanging things of worth with each other, whether it's time, information, assistance, or something else. The point is, the stronger the relationship, the stronger the relationship capital and the more access you ultimately get. I can tell you from experience, developing strong relationships with the right people can do more for you and your business than any other single thing. Now, a common mistake we sometimes make is thinking money is the most important driver to business success, but the truth is, most business opportunities are created through our relationships versus simply having money. Our relationships can not only open tons of doors for us, but they can give us the instant credibility necessary to capitalize on those opportunities. No matter where you're at with your relationships, now is the time to begin thinking about how you can build and leverage your relationship capital. Here's what I want you to do. Over the next few weeks, begin looking at the current relationships you have and start thinking of them in this context. Who do you have a strong relationship with? What relationships could be strengthened? What are some new relationship opportunities you see on the horizon? At the end of the day, knowing the right people in the right places can create a lot of immediate opportunities for you to leverage, for both you and your business.
