- We've all gotten terrible emails but do you know why they were terrible? What are the worst crimes against emails and how can you avoid them? Crime number one, lack of clarity, too much going on. Each email should at best be about one thing. If you write an email that says, hey, just confirming that you'll be at the meeting on Thursday and did you see Todd's funny video and by the way, what should we do about the holiday party, you are inviting disaster. Stick to one topic per email and if you need to make more than one point about that one topic, use a numbered list. If you have two topics, write two emails. Crime number two, trying to be too clever. The thing about electronic communication is it is almost impossible to discern tone.
