How to use asterisks

- If you're making an occasional comment in the document, you can put an asterisk in the text and then add your comment at the bottom of the page. If you want to make more than one comment, you can use a set of symbols in a specific order. One common sequence is to start with the asterisk and continue with the dagger, double dagger, section mark, parallels, and numbers sign. The order in symbols can vary between style guides though, so be sure to check what your specific style guide recommends. Also, if you're making a lot of comments throughout a document, it's often better to use endnotes or footnotes. When you're mixing asterisks with other punctuation marks, the asterisk comes after every mark except the dash. So, if you want to make a comment about a dog rescue, for example, you could write it like this. We got our dog from a rescue in Cambria* - we couldn't be happier, with an asterisk before the dash, or like this…
