How stories engage technical audiences

- Have you ever heard someone tell a story and wonder, where is all this going? They took a long time to set up the context, they took forever to introduce the problem at hand, and they went on tangents. I bet you eventually tuned out. Taking too long to tell a story is like bringing your audience for a ride on the sinking ship of storytelling. They'll want to find the nearest life raft or run out of the room because they don't want to go down with the sinking ship. To avoid this, you want to move the story's main character from one part of the story arc to the next at a reasonable pace. Here are four states I include in any story arc. Number one, context. I set the scene with the basic issue at hand. Number two, challenge. I highlight the challenge or hurdles I faced. Number three, solutions. I go over the options I considered and explain how I arrived at a final solution. Number four, takeaways. I share lessons…
