- Anne Lamott once wrote that no is a complete sentence. When someone says no, we should hear it and respect it. But sometimes we work with individuals who say no to everything. They reject all of our good ideas or slow us down with roadblocks. There's always that one person who is hostile for no good reason. Hostility feels irrational and ultra personal, but I want to offer this HR tip. About half the time, people take a personal problem and turn it into a conflict with someone at work for no good reason. That's right. There's a 50% chance that the hostility is not about you. You hear no, but it's not for you. It's for someone else, who's done them wrong. On the other hand, there is a 50% chance it is about you. But the problem is that you're not a mind reader.
