How to research your market worth online

- One of the biggest mistakes I see negotiators make is starting the conversation thinking that your salary is equal to your worth. What it really boils down to is market economics. So when first thinking about your negotiation, it's important to center yourself on the market value of the position itself, not of you. You've got to know your market. Consider the title, seniority, industry, and geography, and any other broad economic trends that might be impacting your industry. This is just about establishing a baseline expectation and it's an important place to start. You want to understand the supply and demand of your industry. Some websites that you can start with include Salary, Glassdoor, PayScale, and Indeed. You might also want to check out the Bureau of Labor Statistics, get industry-specific reports from trade associations, and use the Salary Insights tool on LinkedIn. What you really need to figure out is what is the position worth to the company? Remember, at this stage in the game, it's not about you. It's about the position.
