It was popularized in the 60's and it refers to the idea that each of us has an internal setting for things, kind of like a rheostat, like the thermometer in your house. We have it for happiness, we have it for income, we have it for activity level. And you may notice that just like the heating and cooling system in your house, you may gain a little weight or lose a little weight, but eventually, it comes back to what it's normally set at.
