- The key thing that's going to influence where you end up in this negotiation is probably your opening offer or their opening offer and yours. And the only thing you can influence is your opening offer. So ideally you wouldn't open first, you'd get them to come out with a number, and quite often they will. I've been thinking about interviews that I've had over the years and I think in more than half of them, they said, "This is what the pay is." So ideally get them to open first if you can. And if they say, :How much do you want?" You could say, "Well, I don't know really. What's the going rate for this job normally?" And try to get them to open first because it might be good news. Imagine if they offer you a huge amount, wouldn't that be great? And if it isn't a great amount, you can always go, "Oh no, I'd want to be paid more than that." So you can always ignore it if it's bad news and take it if it's good news.…
