How to be more effective and efficient
- In any business, but especially in government, you need to know you're serving your customers in the best way possible, and you're often called to report your results to legislators and senior leadership so you need to be able to measure effectiveness and efficiency. Effectiveness is doing a task well enough to fully satisfy the customer. Efficiency is doing a task in the best possible way. You measure effectiveness and efficiency by asking questions, and different types of work require different questions. For example, if you're working on a project, effectiveness questions include is the task getting done? But the bigger questions are, is it done correctly and does it satisfy the customer's needs? The efficiency question is, is the task being done in a timely manner and with the least amount of resources, people, funds, and equipment? I've put a list of situations and questions in the exercise files for you. Download a copy and see if you can add more questions to better measure…
