How to mix quotation marks with other punctuation

- It's not common to have to put a semi-colon, colon or dash next to a closing quotation mark. But fortunately the rules are simple. These marks always go outside a closing quotation mark. Here are some examples. Curtis said, "I don't believe in vampires," right before one grabbed him from behind. Paula's favorite book is "A Tale of Two Cities"; she's read it five times. She sang her favorite line from "Against the Wind": I wish I didn't know now what I didn't know then. So remember a dash, semi-colon and colon go outside a closing quotation mark.
