How to interview for an internal role

- Last year I got asked to speak in front of a bunch of college students on a panel. Now I'd done things like this before. I knew the professor who invited me and it was just going to be a discussion. Low pressure, right? No need to overly prepare so to be honest, I didn't prepare at all. I thought to myself, "Okay, they're just kids. "It's just a panel. "Easy peasy." Well I walked into the lecture hall that morning and the sound girl came up to me to put on my microphone. I looked around a bit confused and said to her, "Where are the other panelists?" "Oh, ma'am", she said. "There aren't any panelists. "You're the only one giving a talk for the next hour." "I'm sorry, what?" You all, I looked at her like a deer in headlights. Panic set in. Needless to say, it was not my best work. Now here was my problem, I was too confident. I'm all for being confident but I took it too far and wasn't honoring to the people that invited me there. Because I thought that this was going to be a piece of cake, I didn't give this opportunity the attention and preparation it deserved. Now if I had, I would have noticed that the email mentioned a solo talk. I would have prepared what I was going to say and well, I wouldn't have embarrassed myself. If we aren't careful, interviewing internally can look really similar. It's so easy to think, "Well I know the people "in the interview, how hard can this be?" Here's the thing, internal interviews can be equally as hard if not harder than external interviews. Just because you have a foot in the door doesn't mean you're a shoe-in for the job. You still have to prove yourself. Internal interviews have some nuances and should be treated with the same preparation, rigor and focused attention as any other interview. In this course, I'm going to teach you how to manage the internal politics that may arise, how to position yourself as the best candidate for the job and ultimately, how to ace your internal interview.
