How internal recruiters work

- The goal of recruiters is ultimately the same, find great people to fill open roles. But how recruiters work varies from company to company, and there are all kinds of different types of recruiters. So let's talk about internal recruiters first. These are also sometimes called talent acquisition managers. As the name implies, internal recruiters work on the inside of a company. Their sole focus is on filling open positions within that organization. They may work on all kinds of positions, they may specialize in, say, accounting or operations, or they may be focused on one geographic area. And internal recruiters typically earn a salary. So whether they fill 20 positions or 200, their income is the same. This, by the way, is a lot different from an agency recruiter, who typically earns most of their income on commission. And for that reason, you'll sometimes see that external recruiters tend to be a little more salesy than an internal recruiter. Internal recruiters also spend a good amount of their time sourcing candidates, which means vetting potential candidates to see if they're worth passing along to the hiring manager. And then once they're at that stage, they spend a good amount of time corresponding with that candidate, setting up interviews, and interacting with them through the offer process. What they don't do is make the final decision, but they do have a lot of pull. That being the case, you want to start that relationship off strong. Be friendly, be professional, and show 'em what you're made of.
