- When you're addicted, knowing where to turn for help can be really overwhelming, 'cause there are a lot of options. Do you go to the detox? Do you go to an ER? Do you go to your primary care physician? Do you just go see a psychiatrist? So what I generally tell people is that you just go through a whole decision hierarchy. So you basically ask yourself certain questions, and the very first decision point is whether you need emergency care, if you're suicidal, homicidal, or unable to take care of yourself. If any of these apply to you, then the emergency room is the best place for you to go. Often, you may feel suicidal only when you're intoxicated, and the feelings of suicide may go away after this. But you should still take them seriously. Suicide is a very, very serious issue, and it has actually been increasing recently.
