How to give empathetic feedback

- Sometimes the easiest way to understand how to receive feedback is to learn how to give empathetic feedback. So there are four strategies that I talk about here. The first is framing it positively. So when you're about to give the feedback, starting the conversation by saying something like, "I'm your biggest champion" or, "I'm here to support you" is so much more powerful than saying something like, "Look, we have some things we need to talk about." Right, this is where kindness and empathy comes into play. Ask questions in a way that it doesn't feel like a personal attack. For example, asking, "What do you think could've been done differently" versus, "What do you think you could've done differently?" Changing one simple word makes all the difference if you want to have a constructive conversation. Be specific. This is really important. I once had a manager who was so nice that she was really wishy-washy when she gave me the feedback. She was sugar-coating and I didn't understand…
