How to get buy-in from your project team

- What is a project plan, really? Well, it's more than just a list of tasks. It's actually a blueprint for the work that a group of people is going to do in order to achieve a desired outcome. I've seen project managers sit down, write a plan, and then deliver it to their team. But that doesn't usually end well. First, because the team lacks a sense of ownership and accountability. And second, the truth is that a lot of people simply won't read, digest, and fully understand a plan that someone else wrote. I've found that the better approach is for the project manager to act as a coach and facilitator. Let the team define the work that they need to do and then capture their ideas in the plan. Then, once the project gets started, you can use the plan to track what's really been done and to estimate how much is left to do.
