How do you negotiate your best deal?

- You could be asked to talk about salary at the very beginning of your conversations. Now, before you answer questions about pay, you need to think about three important numbers. First is your desired rate, the second is your asking rate, and finally is your walkaway rate. The first number, the desired rate is how much you would like to make on the job. The second number, the asking rate will be higher than your desired rate to give you some room to maneuver when making negotiations. As a rule of thumb, make that around 15% higher than your desired rate. Now, this is how to answer how much you want to make if you have to tell the recruiter. You should try not to answer that question until they're ready to make you an offer.
