- When I switched my career, I didn't know much about the Web, but I had a solid graphic design portfolio. So I joined a local advertising Meetup and volunteered to do their website. Now, after I'd been there for a while, someone at the group mentioned that their company was looking for a web developer, and that's how I got my first Internet job. Now, my story is pretty typical. The most common way developers find work is through a reference who told them about the job. Here's some of the other stats from the Stack Overflow developer survey. This should give you some idea of things that you might want to do in order to find work. Clearly, it pays to have connections in the industry, but you want the right type of connections.
