- Distance among countries poses the biggest challenge for any global company. If your company is successful in a large home market like the US, China, or Japan, you already know how to operate at scale. But domestic success does not necessarily prepare a company to succeed globally. By distance I mean geographic distance as well as other types of differences that separate countries. While the US and Mexico are nextdoor neighbors, in almost every other respect like language, culture, and economy, they are quite distance from each other. Let's look at some of the key types of distance that can impact any global company. Geographic distance is the most obvious one. The greater the geographic distance between the home and the host country, the less often corporate executives will be able to visit the host country.
