How career pilots fit within a pivot portfolio, even if not full-time

- Career pilots, or small experiments to test next moves do not ever have to become full-time in order to lead to very fruitful career experiences for employees. For example, when I first started at Google back in 2006, I asked the training team manager if I could get some budget to buy each of us on the training team a business book every month. Maybe even invite the author to lunch, and run a little book club. I had no plans to become Google's chief books officer someday, but sure enough, a couple years later when the Authors at Google team was in transition, they asked me to step in as the interim lead. It was never my full-time role, but for eight months I helped transition that team, helped create a full-time role and bring someone on to lead it moving forward. Thousands of talks later, the Talks at Google program is still thriving to this day. This was only ever 30% of my role, and for less than a year at that.…
