- [Instructor] I was asked this question during my very first job interview. This is a hard one since it touches on the two batteries that power the human engine, aspiration and integrity. Most candidates may wonder do I take on the problem and risk failing, or do I decline and look like I lack courage? It helps to think about these choices more holistically outside the context of an interview so that you're not caught by surprise. Even so, thoughtfully walking your interviewer through your choices can be refreshing. Here's how I would structure an answer. First, set context. These choices do not occur in a vacuum. Ask clarifying questions, and make assumptions and call them out. Explain trade-offs. How will you make the choice in your mind? How would you assess your skills compared to what the situation demands? This honest self-reflection is critical, both in the interview and on the job, and in life in general.…
