- Backup plans are critical to using technology productively. Almost everyone has experienced the dread and frustration that comes with losing hours of valuable work. I've sure felt it. Data failure isn't a matter of if, but when, so we must be prepared. I'll make some recommendations that apply to most everyone. If you work in a large organization, check with your IT department for their data backup policies and systems. First, if you're doing work on your local computer offline instead of the cloud, make sure your critical apps have built-in auto-saves and backups. For example, Microsoft Word, the program I use to create my notes for this course, is set to auto-save and create auto recover information every five minutes.
