Growing and shaping an ecosystem
- How do you shape an ecosystem as it grows? Ecosystems either grow, or they die. They don't stand still. So you need to think about the sequence in which that growth will take place. First question is how do you get started? Who comes to the party first? If you've been to a party and you were the first one there, it was not a very good party yet. So you need more players to join to make it effective. So Apple for example, when it started the iPhone, it found one particular player, AT&T, to be its service provider. And that's how it launched the iPhone. Afterwards, more players can join, and today its available from other service providers. But that's how it got it kick started. Second, you may have to reorganize the ecosystem as it grows. For example, Star Alliance started as a relatively small grouping, and over time it grew to have many, many more players. And as that happened, it realized that the earlier foundation of one firm one vote, wasn't sufficient to really provide…
