- [Jan] Not everyone has grit. (dramatic music) One of the things that happens out here is people always want to know are we almost at the summit? Are we almost at the summit? How much farther? How many more miles, how many more vertical feet? How do you regulate how optimistic and positive you are and what's going to keep the team going? This course is really focused on helping you and your team get through difficult and tough times and the ingredient, the secret ingredient in that is grit. And that grit is about persistence and determination and sacrifice and discipline. It's really based on some principles of a common purpose. - Everybody has that bad moment, but if you have that bad moment and you look around and everybody else has got their head up, you're quicker to get your head back up. - [Jan] What it means to be squared away. - Just having the ability to bring your mind back in when it starts to wander into things that could become more negative for you. - [Jan] The importance of solitude and stepping back and having perspective. - I think everyone unplugs differently. - [Jan] It's about creating trust amongst a team. - Where literally you meet these people, you barely remember everybody's name at that point and then you're putting your life in their hands. - Just add by increments that day and over time when you build trust. - [Jan] And it's about solid communication. - I don't need to be that, the leader, I just need to make sure everyone gets there. - [Jan] Not everyone has grit. Everyone has the capability and the capacity to have grit. It really is about aligning people as a leader to something that has a bigger purpose and something that people are passionate about and when you do that you will find that people dig deep. That they express that grittiness that make teams really extraordinary. (light rumbling music)
