- One of the first things I asked my American colleagues was, "How am I supposed to greet your friends "when you introduce them from the first time?" Their answer was normally, which doesn't help at all. What is normal around the world? When greeting a colleague you don't know very well or a boss, a handshake is always an appropriate choice in the US and elsewhere. When meeting for the first time, consider that Middle Eastern men usually keep their handshake for longer than in the US, making constant eye contact. In Asia, it's common to bow, and in Japan the depth of the bow indicates the respect for the other person. The deeper the bow, the more you respect them. Handshakes are also common. There are cultures where hugging or kissing on the cheeks is normal. Be careful, there are different habits in different places. Some people in the US are huggers.
