- It's easy to get lost in the day-to-day of running a business, but don't forget the big, hairy, audacious goals, as James Collins and Jerry Porras call them in their excellent book, "Built to Last: Successful Habits of Visionary Companies." I keep my BHAGs on a big whiteboard next to my desk, and I try to move the ball forward on at least one of those goals every single month. If you're in a creative business, chances are you're a visual learner. So put visuals to use and create a vision board with clips from articles and magazines that capture the spirit of where you're headed. This is by the way, a great exercise for a team or company retreat. Build a strategic plan every year. I have one that I reference and update regularly.
