Go the extra mile

- My final action for you to be a great team player is to go the extra mile, to deliver more than you've promised. This might mean that you end up doing something that's great for the team but costs you a little, and that's really the essence of teamwork. Anyone who isn't prepared to put themselves out a little for the larger benefit of the team shouldn't be in that team. So deliver more than you've promised. All the best people and companies do this, and it should be an obsession in everything that you do in your life. Good enough is not good enough. The idea is to do whatever you do better and better every time, and better than what the other person is expecting. I've met people on training courses who say they just turn up for work in order to get paid, and they want to get away with doing the minimum, and I'm thinking, but that's really depressing. They're wasting five days a week of their whole life. If you've got to be there anyway, you might as well do the best you can and be proud of what you do. Do it for yourself as well as for the team. So thinking about yourself as a team player, how often do you go that extra mile? What did you do today that was better than it needed to be? And better than people expected? In what areas of your team role could you really excel? And what else can you do in the next few days to surprise your colleagues?
