From the course: Get Unstuck: Make a Plan to Move Your Career Forward

Get your mindset on your side

- One of the biggest hurdles to even starting to get unstuck from a career rut is feeling worthy, feeling worthy of your time, energy and attention that's required to advocate for what you want out of your career. It's hard in a world that tells us to just suck it up and deal with it and be tough and strong everyday. But, to begin advocating for what you want out of work, you have to believe that you deserve it. You can't minimize or dismiss your everyday pain points, the frustrations that keep you from feeling that sensation of forward movement, forward progress in your career in life. I used to struggle with this because, I think, a lot of us, and women especially, are conditioned our entire lives to put everyone's needs before our own. I really used to struggle with something I call the martyrdom mindset. This idea that success requires suffering. It led me to sacrificing my wellbeing for the good of the organization, and it left me, frankly, completely burnt out. To begin getting unstuck from a career rut, you've got to focus on why you are worthy of getting unstuck, why you are worthy of your own efforts and energies and self-advocacy. So take a moment right now to write down a few of the reasons why you're worthy, a few positive affirmations. They might sound like this. I'm worthy of a career that supports the life I want. I am worthy of recognition for my hard work and efforts. Or I'm worthy of fighting on behalf of an organization and cause and mission that I believe in. Take a moment to write them down and post them up where you'll see them each and everyday. When you have your own mindset on your side, the rest comes a lot easier.
